FINAL PROJECT!

I must say, I was quite impressed with myself by the time we finished our final projects. As I explained in the previous post, the final project consisted of designing a two page spread for a story about an immigrant that has accomplished something since thier travel to the U.S. My story features Dahaung Zhou, an international painter and sculptor that is in a collaborative duo with his brother. The two have won awards including American Immigrant Achievement award and been honored by producing work for President Obama. Using InDesign, I created a layout I felt would match the style of the man I interviewed-- modern and simple. This layout consists of all the elements of a typical magazine spread- text of course (body), headline, byline, deck, infographic, photo credit, sidebar and a pullout quote.

Map infographic

In this assignment we used the techniques from the infographic before. This time, we used a map that referred to the topic of our final project. In the final project we have to find an immigrant that has done something significant since thier move to the U.S.  The process of making this map was quite tedious. First I used the pen tool in InDesign to trace the shape of China, then the other countries, then colored them, separated the boardering countries from each other, and then named the countries and oceans. I then placed the already made north symbol and world map view on the bottom of the map. At the top includes the headline and chatter, then there is the body, and a byline. There is also another, more broad view of China in its relation to the rest of the world is shown in an inset picture at the bottem.

Frida 1 and 2 Layouts

We used the skills in photoshop, and InDesign to create layouts for a story written by Elio Leturia, myVisual Journalism professor of course. In this assignment we were provided all the elements for the story such as the text, photos and location that the story took place. While we were given the elements, it was our job to arrage the elements into a layout that would work for a magazine. The first layout is designed in more of a tabloid style, the second is more modern looking as I attempted to use a simpler approach to the article.

Theatre Scene Toning and Restoration

In this project we just Photoshop once again to tone and restore an old photo, this portrait had several holes and streaks within the picture again i have taken down the saturation in the photo down a bit since it appears to be very red I also used the stamp tool to fix the lines that appear on the picture

Bisabuela Image Restoration

Yet another photo restoration project. Professor Leturia's abuela is featured in this assignment. As you can see in the first photo, there are several holes and dark spots. In Photoshop I used the stamp tool to take portions of the photo and place them in the holes. I also brightened some of her features, her eyes, lips, hair and hairpiece. I even took a couple years off by giving definition to her cheekbones (notice the brightening of her cheek and the shadow underneath).

Midterm- Webpage design

In this project we had to use the toned and retouched photos to produce the design for a website. All photos had to reflect a general theme for the website. I used InDesign to create the webdesign page that consisted of photos, text boxes and lines. We used other websites for inspiration for layouts, I used HerCampus site for Columbia students for inspiration.

Photo Toning

The first photo is the original and the second photo has been digitally retouched using Photoshop. This photo illustration is from a series of photos i took to exemplify the thrifting process- old clothes being thrown away and then relived through new owners. We used Photoshop to restore our photos. In Photoshop I lowered the exposure in the the photo, increased the contrast and intensity in the photo. Then I used a technique where I first created a new layer on top of the photo, painted it black, then erased parts of the haze from elements in the picture I felt needed more detail or clarity.
